If you are concerned that your child might be dyslexic, it is a good idea to discuss these concerns with your child's class teacher and School SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) and to maintain dialogue with them throughout the assessment process.
Suzanne McDowell Consultancy can provide a diagnostic assessment to determine any specific difficulties. The assessment usually lasts between two and three hours and includes the following:
● Questionnaire linked to medical/ educational history
● Comprehensive assessment of cognitive/intellectual abilities, e.g., visual and verbal skills, memory, processing speeds;
● Assessment and detailed analysis of phonological and literacy skills, including timed tests of reading and of writing;
● An appraisal of strengths and coping strategies.
● Recommendations for School/ College / University etc
The tests are standardised and so provide evidence of performance relative to a 'norm'.
Suzanne McDowell Consultancy can provide:
Access Arrangements in Exams
Children and adults previously diagnosed with specific learning difficulties or dyslexia will be tested to assess current skill levels (e.g. reading and spelling) in order to provide test scores and information to the school/course.
Handwriting assessment may be used to determine eligibility and support applications for extra time in examinations.
It is the school’s responsibility to interpret these scores and make an application to the appropriate examining body.
Disabled Student Allowance
If you wish to apply for funding through the Disabled Students' Allowances, you must complete and submit the DSA1 form (available at: www.direct.gov.uk/dsa ). You will be required to provide proof of your disability. In the case of dyslexia a full dyslexia assessment as set out above, fulfils this criteria. A copy of your diagnostic report and completed forms should then be sent back to your funding body.
